Leaf vs Laravel, Symfony, and Slim โ€‹

Choosing a PHP framework in 2026 mostly means choosing between four philosophies. This page is our honest comparison, including the cases where you should pick something other than Leaf. We would rather you choose right than choose us and regret it.

The routing numbers measure lookup and dispatch only, not full request throughput. Per single request that is 0.65ยตs for Leaf and 95ยตs for Laravel, both far below typical database time; the point is Leaf leaves the request budget to your product. Methodology in the launch post.

Choose Laravel when... โ€‹

You want the largest PHP product ecosystem and you're happy to adopt its full application model. Laravel has more packages, more tutorials, more hosting products, and more developers for hire than anyone. If you're hiring a large team or need an ecosystem answer for everything from websockets to billing portals, Laravel is a great default. The cost is that your first version inherits the whole application model on day one, whether the product needs it yet or not.

Choose Symfony when... โ€‹

You need deep architectural control, long-term-support guarantees, and enterprise-grade composition. Symfony's component model is the most flexible in PHP, and half the ecosystem (including parts of Laravel) is built on it. The cost is ceremony: more decisions, more configuration, and the steepest learning curve here.

Choose Slim when... โ€‹

You want the smallest possible HTTP layer and you enjoy assembling your own stack. Slim gives you routing and PSR-7 middleware, then gets out of the way. The cost shows up when the product grows: auth, validation, mail, queues, and structure are all separate choices with separate documentation.

Choose Leaf when... โ€‹

You want to get a real product into users' hands quickly and keep the codebase small enough to fully understand. Leaf starts wherever your product does: a single file when you're prototyping, or a full MVC app from day one with leaf create my-app --mvc. Either way it grows through first-party modules (auth, database, billing, queues, mail, and 25+ more) that you install only when your app asks for them, and if you did start tiny, leaf up migrates you into MVC structure when it earns its place. Nothing you skip today becomes a rewrite tomorrow.

And if you build with AI assistants, this is where Leaf goes deepest. Laravel's Boost and the Symfony AI initiative are real and worth knowing about; Leaf's difference is that AI-readiness is the default in every project rather than an add-on: each app carries a shared context file your assistant reads and writes back to, the docs ship in an agent-ready format, and error messages explain their own fix so your assistant (and you) skip the debugging spiral.

Is Leaf a Laravel alternative? For products where you want speed, a small readable codebase, and AI-ready workflows, yes. For teams that want Laravel's full ecosystem and conventions, Laravel remains the right call, and we say so above.

Is Leaf production-ready? Yes. Leaf has been in production since 2019, v5 shipped with every module tagged stable, and modules like auth, billing, and queues are first-party and tested. The launch post covers what v5 hardened.

Can I migrate from Slim or a plain PHP app? Usually gradually. Leaf modules work in any PHP app (that's a design rule for us), so you can adopt auth or the database layer before adopting the framework.
